Selecting The Right Type Of Flashlight

You may think this article a bit beneath me, but during our recent rains I had a power outage. You don’t think about flashlights much until you need (and can’t find) one. Especially one that works. It prompted me to write about the subject for my Jose Mier readers.

A flashlight, also known in the U.K. and elsewhere as a torch is a portable gadget used for to shine light and typically has battery cells for power. A flashlight usually includes a small electrical light bulb, a compartment for batteries which power the bulb, a switch for the light bulb and a parabola-shaped reflector used for focusing the beam of light. The battery compartment likewise serves as a grip for holding the flashlight.

Though the flashlight is of a very basic style, it is a relatively brand-new invention. It came into seeking the incandescent light bulb and the dry cell was developed.

The name “flashlight” has an amusing background. In the early days of the dry cell, the power of a dry cell battery was extremely limited. To conserve the dry cell from releasing quickly, the flashlight was run intermittently and simply long enough to check out the environments, hence the name “flashlight”.

There are a variety of different flashlight styles available online or in stores today. Similar to rechargeable acid type flashlights, dry cell flash lights, rechargeable dry cell type, Light Emitting Diode (aka LED) type, solar charging type, electromagnet type, undersea type, rifle or gun light, head light type,  etc.

. The dry cell flashlight is the most basic style and used in most households and consists of dry cells to power the electric bulb. As the batteries discharge the lighting dims in these flashlights.

Rather than buying a flashlight, which needs battery replacement regularly, a better design is to use rechargeable batteries, which can be lead acid type or dry cell type.

Some utilize photovoltaic panels which are used for recharging when the sun is out. Electromagnet type utilizes a knob or clockwork arrangement. In  the clockwork configuaration a spring is used to power the flashlight and will need to be wound every time to want to use it. This knob style of arrangement has a magnet or moving coil which moves each time the knob is depressed. This charges a capacitor, which offers power to the light bulb.

Light emitting diode flashlights are of a recent style. LED: s have actually been around for decades, the LED flashlight was not readily available till late 90s due to the fact that the LED: s could not be operated continually and their luminosity was very bad.

Adam Savage and Jose Mier agree

LED flashlights take in really little power compared to the traditional electric bulb as LED: s do not produce as much heat as electrical bulb. LED flashlights typically have a body made of metal which will dissipate heat by the process of conduction since LED: s do not generate heat through the light beam like a traditional bulb would.

A headlamp type has a flashlight on a helmet so that the hands are free. Underwater type is a unique flashlight, which is utilized for lighting up undersea objects and is water resistant. Rifle or gun lights are unique flashlights utilized for illumination of target.

Flashlights are available and fairly inexpensive in attractive styles. The cost ranges from a few dollars to a couple of hundred dollars.

To conserve the dry cell from discharging rapidly, the flashlight was operated intermittently and just long enough to inspect out the environments, hence the name “flashlight”.

Akin to dry cell flash lights, rechargeable dry cell type, rechargeable acid type flashlights, solar charging type, -LED (Light Emitting Diode) type, electromagnet type, head lamp type, rifle or weapon light, underwater type and so on
